Decision Science for Disruption Recovery at Delta Air Lines

The operational teams at Delta Air Lines manage an environment of live, constantly changing constraints that have a serious impact on the customer experience and operational reliability of the airline as well as to the health and safety of customers and employees. These constraints are represented by hundreds of data points for every flight that must each be reviewed and acted upon by these operational experts, covering weather concerns, airport staffing levels, gating availability, Air Traffic Control actions, and more. Predictive and prescriptive analytic solutions can help expose upcoming disruption to the airline’s operations and recommend sets of solutions to best mitigate the risks from these schedule interruptions. In particular, these models and tools can simulate a variety of possible disruption scenarios to enable advance planning for irregular operations and well as to suggest recovery options for aircraft routing and crew staffing, all to minimize delays and cancellations and provide a safe and reliable customer experience.
